Top-of-the-Line CL65 AMG Features 604-Horsepower V12 Engine

LOS ANGELES – The Mercedes-Benz CL coupe is making a celebrity appearance at the Greater L.A. Auto Show, open to the public January 6 – 13, 2006. Based on the 2006 S-Class sedan platform, but with a unique two-door premium coupe design, the CL exterior looks futuristic while recalling Mercedes coupes of the past. Sweeping fenders, a delicate yet dynamic roofline, unusual reverse-tapered rear roof pillars and a wrap-around rear window highlight this jewel-like coupe, which includes four oval headlights. For 2006, the AMG sport package featuring athletic body styling and 18-inch split-spoke AMG alloy wheels has been added to the long list of standard equipment for the CL500 and CL600. Also added to the CL600 are Keyless-Go, a heated steering wheel, and .an electronic trunk closer.

Inside, the CL-Class is finished with hand-fitted, premium leather upholstery, hand-polished burl walnut or chestnut wood trim, dual-zone climate control and the sophisticated integration of DVD navigation and a Bose premium audio system with Audiopilot Technology. All CL models are equipped with Active Body Control (ABC), the most advanced active suspension system in production today.

Four Engines Power the Premium Coupes

The CL-Class is available in four incarnations: the CL500, CL600, CL55 AMG and CL65 AMG. The CL500 has a 302-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 that generates an impressive 339 lb.-ft. of torque on a plateau from 2,700 to 4,250 rpm. This engine propels the coupe to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds, and at the same time, is classed as a ULEV or ultra-low emissions vehicle.

The CL500 is fitted with a seven-speed automatic transmission that offers sparkling performance and good fuel economy, with optimally-timed and almost imperceptible gear shifts. The CL600 is powered by a 493-hp, twin-turbocharged V12 engine that provides an astounding 590 lb.-ft. of torque with league-leading refinement. The CL600 features ABC active suspension as well as unique, highly polished 18-inch forged-alloy wheels, exclusive Nappa leather trim, a suede-like Alcantara headliner, active ventilated and heated multicontour seats and CD changer.

The CL55 AMG coupe is powered by a hand-assembled supercharged 5.5-liter V8 engine developing 493 horsepower and a stout 516 lb.-ft. of torque that’s able to rocket the car to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. The AMG SpeedShift automatic transmission is optimized for maximum performance.

6.0-Liter V12 AMG Engine Redefines Performance

The newest addition to the CL coupe family is the CL65 AMG, powered by a six-liter twin-turbo V12 engine that produces 604 horsepower and an astonishing 738 lb-ft of torque. The CL65 AMG’s twin-turbocharged engine features a number of high-tech modifications. A precision-balanced longer-stroke crankshaft, larger-bore forged pistons and beefier bearings and oil-spray cooling system are but a few of the highlights. The AMG engine cover is made from deep-drawn aluminum and carbon-fiber reinforced plastic. The twelve-cylinder engine is assembled by hand at the AMG engine facility. The “one-man, one-engine” philosophy at AMG is symbolized by a signature plate on the engine that bears the name of the master technician who assembled the engine. While the CL65 AMG can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, its super-smooth twelve-cylinder power plant is also ideally suited for relaxed cruising in high gear.

While all CL-Class models are equipped with ABC active suspension that offers an unparalleled combination of ride quality and handling agility, the CL65 AMG is equipped with special AMG spring struts with firmer damping. Reworked dynamic systems such as ESP stability control and ASR traction control complement the enhanced chassis setup.

Stopping Power to Match Performance

To cope with the high power output of the AMG twin-turbo engine, the front wheels of the AMG V12 model are equipped with high-performance eight-piston compound brakes. For the design of the AMG high-performance braking system, engineers drew on their extensive racing experience acquired through more than three decades of motorsports competition.

Internally ventilated and perforated front discs measure 15.4 inches in diameter and are fitted with eight-piston fixed calipers. CL65 AMG front brakes use two-piece rotors and hubs made from cast iron and aluminum. Compared with conventional brake systems, this compound technology offers a weight saving of some 20 percent, while the brakes’ increased capacity to handle thermal stress measurably increases durability. The rear brakes use 13.7-inch internally ventilated and perforated discs with four-piston fixed calipers. High-performance staggered-width tires – 245 / 40 ZR 19 in front and 275 / 35 ZR 19 in the rear – are mounted on AMG twin-spoke wheels – 8.5 x 19 in front and 9.5 x 19 at the rear.

Excellent stopping power for all other CL models is provided by large, four-wheel vented disc brakes (with the front discs also perforated), enhanced with four-channel ABS anti-lock control. As on all other Mercedes-Benz models, Brake Assist can potentially reduce braking distances in emergency or “panic” stops. In addition, standard ESP stability control helps to keep the car from skidding and provides traction control.

Design Distinguishes AMG

The designers of the CL65 AMG made subtle enhancements to the body while remaining true to its fundamental design philosophy. An AMG front apron with a large cooling air intake and integral front clear-lens fog lamps gives the vehicle an aggressive, almost menacing appearance.

The dynamic side view is emphasized by side skirts that pick up the line of the front apron, and by the chrome “V12 Biturbo” lettering on the front fenders. The rear is finished off with two sets of chromed twin tailpipes and the powerful lines of the rear apron.

Safety Innovation

The Mercedes-Benz CL-Class features innovative safety technology that often leads the way for the rest of the auto industry. Up-front crash sensors help a central crash sensor to determine impact severity and deployment level of the two-stage front air bags. An Occupant Classification System uses a sensor in the seat to classify occupant weight and, along with information from the vehicle crash sensors, can also vary air bag deployment accordingly. In addition to its front air bags, all CL-Class coupes come with side curtain air bags that span both sides of the car, as well as a side impact air bag mounted in each door and in the side panels of the rear seat area. The curtain air bags help protect the head and shoulders in a side collision, and work in conjunction with the door-mounted side air bags that help protect the chest and hip area.
